A theory about this half a second slip in Noatok’s cold glare. 

So Tarrlok and Noatok had this amazing friendship before Papa Yakone went all “ooooh, my sons are benders, yippee!” and it was clear that Noatok looked out for Tarrlok. Tarrlok may have been the one person Noatok cared about more than anyone, even standing up to their father so Yakone would give Tarrlok a break when he couldn’t waterbend as well as his brother. But when he realized how far Yakone was willing to take their bloodbending. Tarrlok mentions how Noatok became detached, and cold. He may have realized that as much as he loved Tarrlok, he may have guessed that Yakone’s next step would be for them to bloodbend each other. And while (I’m just guessing here,) the thought of that must have been so repulsive that he couldn’t be as close to Tarrlok as he was, bending was what he was good at. It was his thing. Later in life, tarrlok even reffered to him as a prodigy. So he detached himself from his brother, who he loved more than anything, and must have figured that if he did that, then bloodbending him wouldn’t have felt as bad. But when he snaps on his dad right after he bloodbends Tarrlok, his emotionless demeanor slips, and we see the anger that he’s been bottling up, even if it’s just for a second. And it comes when he realizes that bloodbending Tarrlok was the hardest thing he had to do in his life, especially because after detaching himself from Tarrlok, Tarrlok still refused to put Noatok through what he just went through.
